Physiotherapy for dogs is beneficial for many reasons: sporting dogs can benefit from regular physiotherapy to maintain optimum performance for their chosen discipline whether that be agility, fly ball, greyhound racing dogs, or working police / gun dogs. Elderly dogs with degenerative conditions can benefit from regular physiotherapy to keep them as comfortable as possible while managing compensatory symptoms.
Sometimes dogs do injure themselves to a point where surgery is required. Physiotherapy can help with the dog’s recovery post surgery and help to regain the best function possible. Even if it’s just a tweak, physiotherapy treatment can aid recovery from any form of injury to get them back on their feet and back doing what they love as quickly as possible.
Signs that your dog may benefit from physiotherapy:
- Loss in performance
- Stiffness getting up
- Reluctance to exercise
- Muscle wastage or asymmetry
- Altered Gait; toe dragging; tripping
- Reluctance to do what’s normal for that dog, e.g. reluctance to go up/down stairs
- Behavioural changes
- Swelling around joints
Problems dogs may have that could benefit from Physiotherapy:
- Pre-surgery strengthening
- Post soft tissue or orthopaedic surgery rehabilitation
- Acute or chronic musculoskeletal injury or pain
- Wounds
- Loss in athletic performance
- Osteoarthritis and other age related problems
- Neurological disorders
- Congenital and inherited disorders – hip/elbow dysplasia
- Conservative management for orthopaedic and neurological conditions
We encourage working as part of a team with your dog’s vet – for example your vet may want to see the dog beforehand to help with diagnosis and / or pain relief if necessary.
